The South Asia Consultation on Safe Migration to Combat Trafficking held in New Delhi on 17th February 2025 , India, brought together countries that have seen significant migratory movements both within the region and globally. Representatives from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka attended the event.
The key goal of the consultation was to unite various stakeholders, including decision-makers, law enforcement officials, civil society organizations, and research institutions. They gathered to create a shared platform to discuss safe migration and find solutions to combat cross-border trafficking. This gathering aimed to forge stronger partnerships and collective action to protect the most vulnerable and ensure their safety and dignity.

Background:
Human trafficking, often termed as “modern-day slavery,” ranks as the third-largest organized crime globally, only behind drugs and arms trafficking. This nefarious trade preys on vulnerable groups, particularly women, children, and marginalized communities, robbing them of their dignity and freedom. South Asia, grappling with socio-economic challenges and porous borders, has unfortunately become a hotspot for trafficking networks. The 2024 US Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report highlights the critical situation, ranking all South Asian countries between Tier 2 and Tier 3.
The South Asia Consultation on Migration and Trafficking brought together global experts, law enforcement officers, activists, and survivors to brainstorm and develop strategies to combat human trafficking. The key takeaways from this event emphasized the urgent need for stronger cross-border cooperation and comprehensive policy frameworks to effectively dismantle trafficking networks.
